Formulary Enhancements
Hospitals now must indicate if an item that they’re adding to their formulary is a Drug with an NDC or a Drug with a Non-NDC Identifier. This is part of an overall push to better classify the types of items that hospitals are adding to their formularies so that we can identify NDCs and better match those NDCs against EDI feeds from the wholesaler.
If the item has an NDC, it must contain 10 or 11 digits and the only valid characters are dashes. If the identifier doesn’t meet these criteria, the user will not be able to add the Drug with NDC as a custom item.
If the item does not use an NDC identifier, the user will be asked to specify the identifier type. Currently, the two options are “Identifier for a custom compounded item” or “Other”. If the user selects “Other”, they will be prompted to provide a description of the item. Both of these fields are required.
